Barack Obama has become the first black president in our country's history. Forgive me for saying this, but it doesn't impress me. I can honestly tell you that electing a black man president isn't that big of a deal - it's way overdue.

To me, the bigger deal is how much our country has changed in the past 55 years.

Obama's Victory is Republican Party's Master Plan?

Ticker, CUNY Baruch College, NY

The recent presidential election has been talked about to death. However, I need to express how wronged I feel as a Republican. What options do the Republicans have four years from now? Should the red states secede? We could call it "The Market Shall Overcome" States of America.

Temitope Maiyegun has lived everywhere from Nigeria to Vienna. Now Philly-local, she talks Kanye and candy.

Street: There is a Facebook group entitled "The REAL Temi Maiyegun." Are you in fact the real Temi?

Temitope Maiyegun: If there's a fake Temi, let me know! The group came about during the summer before my junior year, when people claimed there were two sides to me that people don't get to see until they get to know me: the crazy and the evil.

If you have been receiving an influx of pointless e-mails, people trying to schedule appointments with their advisor, requests for this class at this time and stupid arguments, then you must be an English major.

For those non-English majors who do not know what I am talking about, let me fill you in.

On Nov. 4, the voters of California decided that two people of the same gender could not enter into a secular contract of marriage with one another. They were convinced of this, in large part, by an expensive and dishonest advertising campaign paid for, in large part, by the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter -day Saints.

Battery cage eggs served in St. Joe's cafeteria conflict with Catholic values

The Hawk, Saint Joseph's University, PA

To the Editor:

As a Jesuit university, we expect Saint Joseph's to live out the values it teaches and put Catholic ethics into action in all aspects of its operations. Unfortunately there is one area where St. Joe's is acting in direct opposition to the teachings of the Pope and other Catholic leaders, and it's an area that might surprise you: the cafeteria.

If you have time, head to Chinatown with your friends for dinner some time soon. Take a good look around over the next 12 months, because by December 2009, you'll see something very different: a casino in the Gallery. And once the casino shows up, it won't be long before crime and decay set in.

More open gates at night would increase security

The Torch Online, Saint John's University New York, NY

Public safety's policies and officers are intended to help the student body become more comfortable with their surroundings after moving here. But some of those policies continue to stir up heated debates from students, especially the issue of the late-night gate openings.

Racism still major issue after Obama elected

Acorn, Drew University, NJ

The election is over and Barack Obama is the president-elect. No matter which party one subscribes to, the fate of our country seemed to depend on the outcome of this election.

Our economy is in the worst condition it has been in many years, the current president has record-low approval ratings, foreign opinion of America is abysmal and globalization has changed the world's commerce.

The other day I had a flashback to high school. I was having a conversation about one of my service experiences from last year when the person I was talking to laughed and said, "Oh, you're one of those kids." I was thoroughly perplexed and when I asked what they meant.

R.I.P. GOP?

I'd like to take a moment to offer my thoughts and prayers in remembrance of the Republican Party (1980-2008). Of course the party lives on, in name, but the events of Nov. 4 were the final nail in the coffin of the American conservative movement as we knew it.

Unions, not General Motors, to blame for automotive industry's struggles

The Hawk, Saint Joseph's University, PA

In the past few weeks, the automotive industry-specifically General Motors-has been asking for a major "bailout" by the federal government.

Specifically, they want to be loaned billions of dollars at low interest rates, something that no rational investor would normally do.

It is evident that there is no easy solution to fighting hate and it can be agreed that something must be done. Should it be a top-down approach, a bottom-up approach or both? We can't know without a dialogue.

Obama's Postive Progressive Tax Plan

Statesman, SUNY Stony Brook, NY

2 days ago by Joseph Labriola

If you want to talk taxes and debate the point and purpose of them, than you have to consider the point and purpose of government. From these considerations, the following questions naturally arise: Why do we bother having a governing body that collects money? What should government be able to spend that money on? Shouldn't people be able to spend what they've earned directly on what they themselves deem valuable, without the government middleman?

These are all good questions and they all have good answers.

Looking Past the Lies of Obama's Tax Plan

Statesman, SUNY Stony Brook, NY

2 days ago by Zachary Kurtz

Obama is famous for selling himself as friendly to families in the working-class tax brackets. His oft-quoted line is, of course, that he's going to offer a tax cut for 95 percent of American workers and their families. This figure is challenged by the Tax Policy Center, which critiqued the details of Obama plan and concluded that this number would be closer to 81 percent of households that would see a tax decrease and 10 percent would see a tax hike.

While the nation chose a Democratic president, the conservative voice remained strong as states passed bans on gay marriage and adoptions by unmarried couples. On Tuesday, Nov. 4, California, Arizona and Florida superceded the judicial system by each passing a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman.
